It wasn’t an illogical conclusion, but he was nonetheless surprised by the morbid thought. There was death and shouting and fire and lead flying everywhere. Not a situation that he was unaccustomed to.
But the grey. There was so much grey. So much ash.
For how long they had been running and fighting in the empty city, he had forgotten. Not that it mattered, anyway. All he knew was that they had to keep running. The enemy was everywhere and his ammunition was low, so there was nothing to do but run.
And so they did. Under broken bridges and through deserted buildings. Along streets lined with hollowed skyscrapers
